Type: Grassy Weed
Traits: Flat, spreading
Life Cycle: Summer Annual
Appearance: Crabgrass has quarter inch wide leaves. As the plant matures, the leaves and sheathes turn a dark red color. Crabgrass tends to show up in thin areas of your lawn where the grass has been removed by a trimmer. Crabgrass spreads outwardly and can grow up to two feet high.
Crabgrass produces thousands of seeds each year, which is why it is important to get control of your lawn before crabgrass takes control of it. The best way to control crabgrass is to us a preemergent herbicide. Application time is vital as applying too early or two late will not benefit you. The best time to apply is when your soil temperature approaches 55 degrees. Post emergent herbicides that contain mesotrione or quinclorac are effective on young plants. The longer you wait to apply, the less effective a herbicide becomes.
