Type: Grassy weed
Traits: Low growing
Life Cycle: Perennial
Appearance: Nimblewill is a grassy weed with blue green foliage. It grows well in both shady and sunny areas of the lawn. Nimblewill grows in patches and spreads through stolons. The gray green color and coarse leaves are easy to discern. Nimblewill produces spike panicles in late summer and early fall. The seedheads are long and have hair like awns.
Controlling Nimblewill requires a multi-pronged approach. You want to ensure that your lawn is healthy and lush to prevent Nimblewill from developing by reseeding bare areas, ensuring your lawn has the appropriate nutrients needed for optimal growth. Nimblewill can be dug up and destroyed or a variety of herbicides can be used. If there are only a couple of sprouts of Nimblewill, you can use glyphosate to kill the weed. You can also use a selective herbicide like mesotrione to kill out the weed. On average, it will take three applications spaced two weeks apart to get rid of the Nimblewill.
